- Belated happy 2010 to all!  And happy Tet in advance, it will coincide with Valentine's Day this year. :D

- Support global warming! Sorry for the polar bears and all but there's only so much my heating bill can take. :dead:

- About commissions, you're more than welcome to note me if you're interested but please note that I don't do requests or art trades.

Cheers.

I finally watched it! more than a year after its release.. ^^; better late than never :] I must admit I was in no particular hurry to watch it since I hadn't really enjoyed Makoto Shinkai’s previous work.
But this one definitely does not disappoint; actually I was blown away…

To start off, the artwork is the most beautiful I have ever layed eyes on, period. Just looking at the backgrounds makes me direly want to screen shot each and every scene of the movie. and I think I did (btw, is it just me or is Shinkai kinda obsessed with clouds? lol)

But it’s not merely the beautiful visuals, the poignant portrayal of the bittersweetness of love/life that I’m sure many can relate to is really what draw me in. As did the other shows from the same creator, "Byousuku 5 Centimeter" deals with separated love and loneliness, in other words, distance and communication (or lack thereof) and how the heart approaches what it yearns;
Plot-wise, I would just say the movie is anything but exciting. It was not meant to be. It captures the realities and ordinaries of life with its struggles and obstacles, that come together in deep moments, how people come and go in our own lives and not everything ends in happiness; no matter how hard you try, some things just can’t be overcome.

Makoto Shinkai does a fantastic job at creating a story that seems so real, I felt like I had known these characters for an entire series before the whole thing was over; the monologue-storytelling effect is very effective in this case. While I think this movie ends in an emotionally unsure way, I also think it is the ending that feels right : after the train passed by, the main character realizes that "she" had pursued her happiness and it's time for him to start a new life. bittersweet ending. Although the story is simply a reflection of life, it captured every essence of a good animation and story telling. It packed a lot of meanings in it provided you could appreciate it.

Overall, this show is definitely a must see, the artwork is mind boggling while the story is heartwrenching and touching at the same time. But if you are not the type that can stand slow paced story telling, then better stay out :]

As for me, echoes of my own life aside, "Byousoku 5 centimeter" took its place yesterday up there amongst my all-time favourite movies, animated or otherwise.
*keeps rewatching that ending music video filling in all the blanks..arghh*

On an unrelated note, I've lately received several (two that is :yum: ) print requests in my inbox. While I am flattered that someone would want to purchase my stuff, I have to say I don't intend to get a print account anytime soon. Sorry.
